Malabar mutton curry, the name itself indicates it is a dish from the coastal area of Malbar in Kerala. In Malbar people use coconut for almost all recipes, as coconuts are abundant. It is a popular dish of Kerala and goes well with Kerala parathas.
Ingredients
  • 500 gms mutton
  • 200 gms potatoes
  • 6 green chilies
  • ½ inch ginger
  • 10 cloves of garlic
  • 1 coconut
  • 100 gms onions
  • 1 bunch fresh coriander
  • 3 tsp coriander seeds
  • 10 dry red chilies
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • 10 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 gms garam masala
  • ¼ tsp mustard
  • Salt to taste
  • 75 gms refined oil
  • A bunch of curry leaves
Instructions
  1. Heat oil in a pan. Stir in few chopped onions, ginger pieces, few curry leaves and fry. Then add the paste of coriander seeds; dry red chilies, garam masala, garlic cloves and fry for few more minutes.
  2. To this add cleaned mutton and salt and fry.
  3. Add water and close the lid and let it boil. While it is boiling, add cut potatoes and some coconut milk and mix well (coconut milk should be thin).
  4. Coconut milk: Grind coconut pieces in a mixer with little water to a paste. Add more water if it is too thick. Strain the milk and throw away the pulp.
  5. When the mutton is completely done, pour the remaining coconut milk, slit green chilies, lemon juice and turmeric. Mix well.
  6. Season the curry with mustard seeds, remaining onions and curry leaves. Malabar mutton curry is now ready to serve. Garnish with chopped coriander at the time of serving.
