Malabar mutton curry, the name itself indicates it is a dish from the coastal area of Malbar in Kerala. In Malbar people use coconut for almost all recipes, as coconuts are abundant. It is a popular dish of Kerala and goes well with Kerala parathas.
Ingredients
- 500 gms mutton
- 200 gms potatoes
- 6 green chilies
- ½ inch ginger
- 10 cloves of garlic
- 1 coconut
- 100 gms onions
- 1 bunch fresh coriander
- 3 tsp coriander seeds
- 10 dry red chilies
- ½ tsp turmeric
- 10 tsp lemon juice
- 2 gms garam masala
- ¼ tsp mustard
- Salt to taste
- 75 gms refined oil
- A bunch of curry leaves
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan. Stir in few chopped onions, ginger pieces, few curry leaves and fry. Then add the paste of coriander seeds; dry red chilies, garam masala, garlic cloves and fry for few more minutes.
- To this add cleaned mutton and salt and fry.
- Add water and close the lid and let it boil. While it is boiling, add cut potatoes and some coconut milk and mix well (coconut milk should be thin).
- Coconut milk: Grind coconut pieces in a mixer with little water to a paste. Add more water if it is too thick. Strain the milk and throw away the pulp.
- When the mutton is completely done, pour the remaining coconut milk, slit green chilies, lemon juice and turmeric. Mix well.
- Season the curry with mustard seeds, remaining onions and curry leaves. Malabar mutton curry is now ready to serve. Garnish with chopped coriander at the time of serving.
